Our Yoga Journey: A Practice of Self-Regulation and Awareness
In our yoga journey, one of the most valuable lessons we can embrace is the art of subjective noticing. This means learning to truly tune in—becoming curious about how we feel, moment by moment, and responding in ways that support us.
Yoga, at its core, is a practice of self-regulation. While it may share surface similarities with exercise, the intent and impact of yoga are fundamentally different. In exercise, the focus often leans toward building strength, enhancing aerobic capacity, or shaping the body. These goals relate largely to structure and output.
Yoga, on the other hand, invites a more inward exploration. In my teaching, I like to highlight that yoga is not merely a form of exercise. Instead, it offers a unique opportunity to create change on a neurological level. It asks us to become aware—not just of the body’s movements, but of the quality of those movements and the internal sensations they produce.
This is where subjective noticing comes in. Through mindful practice, we learn to distinguish between:
A sense of relaxation
The feeling of effort—using just the right amount of energy needed to do something
And tension—when we’re using more effort than is actually required
To notice these states, we may need to slow things down. We might choose to make a movement smaller or repeat it several times, gently inviting greater clarity. With this approach, yoga becomes less about performing and more about perceiving.
This kind of attention spills over into everyday life. Next time you go for a walk, try becoming aware of how you’re moving. Can your shoulders and arms swing a little more freely? Can your rib cage rotate gently so the pelvis moves with more ease? These simple shifts often begin with awareness—and awareness is something we practice on the mat.
Yoga gives us a space to observe without judgment, to feel without needing to fix, and to move in ways that support our unique needs. As we continue this journey together, let’s keep returning to that place of inner listening. Because sometimes, the smallest internal adjustment can lead to the most profound transformation.
Move the Way You're Meant To
In my yoga practice, we focus on movement that aligns with how the human body is anatomically designed to move. This means working with your body—not against it—using natural, functional patterns that support strength, ease, and resilience over time.
Rather than forcing shapes or pushing through tension, we explore movement that feels intuitive and sustainable. The aim is not performance, but presence.
If you're curious to learn more or want to experience it for yourself, I offer a consultation class where we can explore what this approach is all about and how it might support your needs.
